I love this poem! Need Some Inspiration? To My Dear Friend Brad!!!

This is something different for me but I wanted to share a beautiful poem by Veronica Shoffstall . I first read this when I was 15 or 16 and it really made me think. Now after so many life experiences it is invaluable to me. I hope it gives you some comfort as well!!
Love, Heidi

After a While

After a while you learn
The subtle difference between
Holding a hand and chaining a soul
And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning
And company doesn't always mean security.
And you begin to learn
That kisses aren't contracts
And presents aren't promises
And you begin to accept your defeats
With your head up and your eyes ahead
With the grace of a woman
Not the grief of a child
And you learnTo build all your roads on today
Because tomorrow's ground is
Too uncertain for plans
And futures have a way
Of falling down in mid flight
After a while you learn
That even sunshine burns if you get too much
So you plant your own garden
And decorate your own soul
Instead of waiting
For someone to bring you flowers
And you learn
That you really can endure
That you are really strong
And you really do have worth
And you learn and you learn
With every good bye you learn.

  3. Heidi:

A very good poem, insightful, and chucked full of wisdom. And of course, the bottom line, you learn. And we all should remember that to attract a worthy mate, you must also be worthy. And I believe that's at the heart of this short poem.

    Happy trails.

  4. Wow. So that's what we have in common. In addition to trying to manage a healthier lifestyle in this world of temptation, we both stumbled upon this timeless and powerful poem before life really started hurling boulders at us. lol

The line that always stayed with me was ... Decorate your own soul instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers ... and it has served me quite well. Thanks for sharing a blast from my past, which is even more relevant today.

  12. What a great poem/message!
And how true. Too bad I can't just learn by reading the wise words of others. Too bad I have had to learn the hard way. But at least now I can understand what these beautiful words mean. And they are comforting and encouraging.
    Thanks for posting it!
