Going Organic Really Does Make A Difference!

Recycle, recycle, recycle-another of my favorites that I hope you will find helpful!

In recent years there has been alot of buzz about going organic. I try to buy as many organic products as I can afford and feel that my family benefits from this. When I first started understanding the importance of organic products I was appalled about what really goes on in the food industry. I am by no means even remotely perfect at buying organic but I am making an effort. If an organic super spy came to my house they would throw me in the your an organic fraud jail. I think I could plead innocence because I do not profess to be more than a wannabe so you genuine health nuts go easy on me. I really do the best I can as far as purchasing organic and you will see why below.
What Does Organic Really Mean??

An organic product is raised, grown, and processed without the use of synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, antibiotics or hormones. Only farmers who produce food according to USDA organic standards and become certified by an independent third-party accredited agent can label their product as "certified organic" (with the exception of very small farms with sales under $5000 annually).
Why You Should Consider Going Organic
**Organic products meet stringent standards. Organic certification is the public’s assurance that products have been grown and handled according to strict procedures without persistent toxic chemical inputs.

**Organic farmers build healthy soil. Soil is the foundation of the food chain. The primary focus of organic farming is to use practices that build healthy soils.
**Organic production reduces health risks. Many EPA-approved pesticides were registered long before extensive research linked these chemicals to cancer and other diseases. Organic agriculture is one way to prevent any more of these chemicals from getting into the air, earth and water that sustain us. More here.
**Taste Better and Truer Flavor. Scientists now know what we eaters have known all along: organic food often tastes better. It makes sense that strawberries taste yummier when raised in harmony with nature, but researchers at Washington State University just proved this as fact in lab taste trials where the organic berries were consistently judged as sweeter. Plus, new research verifies that some organic produce is often lower in nitrates and higher in antioxidants than conventional food. Let the organic feasting begin! More here.
** Reduce The Toxic Load: Keep Chemicals Out of the Air, Water, Soil and our Bodies. Buying organic food promotes a less toxic environment for all living things. With only 0.5 percent of crop and pasture land in organic, according to USDA that leaves 99.5 percent of farm acres in the U.S. at risk of exposure to noxious agricultural chemicals. Our bodies are the environment so supporting organic agriculture doesn’t just benefit your family, it helps all families live less toxically.

I do understand that going organic can be more expensive so for me I pick and choose on the what the best choices to go organic on are and I will share those with you in my next post (I always, always go organic on dairy before anything and if I ate meat I would absolutely go organic there too).

  5. I've started paying closer attention to organic and do what I can to buy organic when at all possible. I started paying closer attention when my husband was diagnosed with Renal Cell Carcinoma a few years back and knew he would be putting enough ugly stuff in his body with chemo and such that I'd do our part by limiting anything unnatural.

  8. Wonderful to read more about organic farming. There has recently been a programme on British television showing an organic vegetable farm. Apparently farmers plant Nasturtium plants which attracts the pests from the surrounding crops thus they attack the Nasturtiums and leave the vegetables alone ... better than spraying any day and adding colour in between the rows of vegetables too!!

  9. I've started buying more organic food, mostly to be healthier. The added bonus is environmental reasons though. Sometimes I wonder if products can pass as "organic" in the store just because they are, say, 10 percent organic. It just wouldn't surprise me if we are sometimes being deceived, you know?

I guess it pays to do research to know what we are really buying.

  10. Great post! I agree, organic is the best choice. Unfortunately, the higher cost keeps me from buying it most of the time. By the way, I tagged you. Check out my blog for more info.

  17. Hi Heidi! I don't know if I've ever told you how precious I think the photos of your munchkins are - too cute!

Organic has come down in price quite a bit since it became all the rage. I eat a lot of fruit and raw vegetables so now I pretty much always buy them organic.

Have a relaxing...oh you have little ones...have a fun holiday, lol.

    Take Care!

  18. If everyone were to go organic, I'm pretty sure the price of organic products would fall. Meantime, I try my best to eat organic as much as possible within my budget.
Think about it - although it's more expensive to eat organic food, you will end up healthier and therefore less likely to fall sick, so you save on medical bills. And we all know how expensive medical bills are!

  19. Another great post, Heidi. Growing up in the Philippines, all we ate were all organically grown. But that was 30 plus years ago. Nowadays, the farmers there use chemically produced fertilizers and pesticides.

I always think that there is a strong link of these fertilizers and pesticides to colon cancers, especially when produce are eaten raw, such as in salads and fresh fruits. Not only colon cancers, but a host of other cancers that I think these chemicals are responsible for. No researchers have claimed these, these are just my personal belief and theory on cancers, pesticides, and fertilizers.

I agree with the others that it would be nice if the prices of those organic products are not too high.

  23. When we first attempted to go organic, all was well. Then we quickly realized how expensive it was so we had to cut back.

It's unfortunate that the better things in life cost so much.

  25. Most farmers in India are ignorant of organic farming, but they do not use pesticides or herbicides either as they are quite expensive. Farmers in some parts of India have started going organic and they are successful as there is a good demand.

  26. Great info Heidi...so sad though the good, healthy foods are so expensive, making it difficult for those on a budget to eat what they want...doesn't seem right!!!
