Tummybusters-Foods To Avoid If You Want A Flat Stomach

Below is a list of foods that are known flat tummy busters and when I read this I realized that as hard as I try I am still making some big food mistakes. I am guilty for sure of the chewing gum, salt, tea and raw foods. Check this out and see if perhaps some of these foods are in your diet and sabotaging your best efforts for that flat tummy.

Tummybusters!

Bulky Raw foods- Lightly cooked vegetables offer much the same nutritional benefits as the raw version, however cooked vegetables take up much less room in gastrointestinal (GI) tract as the raw vegetables.

Gassy Foods-Avoid beans, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, onions, peppers and citrus fruits as these will bloat up your stomach.

Fizzy Drinks-Okay, I love fizzy drinks-love them but think of where all the bubbles go? That’s right straight into your belly.

Fried Foods-Fatty foods, especially the fried ones, are digested more slowly, causing you to feel heavy and bloated.

Chewing Gum- As you chew gum, you swallow air which gets trapped in your GI tract and causes pressure, bloating and belly expansion.
Salt-Water is attracted to sodium, which is why when you eat foods with a lot of sodium (salty foods), you’ll temporarily retain more fluid which gives you a puffy appearance and a sluggish feeling.

Sugar Alcohols-These are sugar substitutes (called xylitol or malitol) that are generally found in products such as low-calorie or low carb cookies, sweets and energy bars. Like fiber, your GI tract can’t absorb most of them. They can cause abdominal distention and bloating.

Spicy Foods-Foods that have black pepper, nutmeg, cloves, chili powder, hot sauces, onions, garlic, mustard, hot peppers, barbecue sauce, horseradish, ketchup (I despise ketchup), tomato sauce or vinegar can all stimulate the release of stomach acid which can cause gut irritation and bloating.

Excess Carbs-As a back-up energy source, your muscles store a type of carbohydrate called glycogen. Every gram of glycogen is stored with about 3g of water. Your body doesn’t need all the stockpiled fuel unless you plan to hike Mount Everest tomorrow. Decrease your intake of high-carb foods such as pasta, bananas, and bread to temporarily train your body to access this stored fuel and burn it off.

Alcohol, Coffee, Cocoa, Tea, And Acidic Fruit Juices-Each of these can irritate your GI tract and cause swelling.

By the way, I am behind in commenting and dropping again but hope to get back on track in the next day or two so thanks for your patience everyone!

Oh, I love spicy foods though, and also garlic (love pasta in olive oil and lots of garlic) and onions. But then I think they have their benefits too, so maybe, just have to moderate consumption.

oh my. guilty. guilty. and guilty.

no wonder my stomach's not looking as flat as it used to... :)

People forget about the sugar alcohols - besides the bloating that accompany the gum, certain types will also cause another type of upset stomach where you may be sitting for a prolonged period of time.

Nice reminders.

You hit the edges of chewing gum, Heidi. But, big danger of this as a 24 / 7 habit is the air bubbles that get trapped in the lungs. Can lead to Emphasyema, some say.

Waiting for 2009 to appear,
Let me wish you now and here,
A very happy & smashing new year!!

Hi Heidi ... this is a very useful post especially when you have somewhere special to go and don't want to feel uncomfortable. I have noticed that potatoes also appear to make the tummy swell up. Over the Christmas break, my daughter told me of a method that reduces this problem. She peels and cuts her potatoes placing them in a pan then she pours on boiling water and leaves for 2 minutes - straining off the excess water - then she cooks them normally. This apparently pulls off much of the starch that causes the problem.

May I take this opportunity to wish you and your family a wonderful, healthy and prosperous New Year.

Very best wishes from Polly x

Health Nut:

Geezo! You just x'ed out my entire diet! I suppose I could heat up some veggies, but without garlic, pepper, salt and a little spice?

Great advice as always.

Happy New Year.

All the best to you and your family for a Happy New Year 2009.

Happy New year to you and yours!

You are making things realllllyyy hard for me!
I chew the gum because it keeps my mind off of eating.
I don't like many veggies but I try to get in a lot of them so I do a lot of broccoli and cabbage!
And I eat a lot of beans for the fiber
Raw vs lighty cooked veggies...uuuggghhhh, this is way to complicated, my grocery list now consists of only water!

I agree with Lynne! what in the world is left????
tahtimbo said...
Okay, that kind of narrows things down a bit. Those are a few of my favorite things (except the raw veggies, unless there's a dip). Thank you for the information, I just never thought there would be so many foods on this list.
