Rev Up Your Metabolism With These Healthy Tips

Metabolism, metabolism, metabolism. That one word has always been a mystery to me. Apparently I have a good metabolism (at least that is what my mother has always told me and I am not one to argue with her) and to tell you the truth I was never to sure what having a good metabolism entailed just was glad that I did (based upon serious looks my mother made when talking of metabolism ). One of my friends who is forever on a diet will tell you that she has a terrible metabolism and can never lose weight because of her metabolism (of course she always mentions this while eating several cookies at once). I decided to delve into the metabolism mystery and find some tips to help you speed up your metabolism whether you think you have a good one or a bad one.

Apparently, when you have a high metabolic rate this increases the amount of calories, or energy, the body burns on a daily basis. Without optimal metabolism the body will store excess calories as fat for future use. The problem for many people is they don’t ever use these excess calories and as a result struggle with weight issues ( not fun).

Vavavoom Your Metabolism

**Eat Spicy Foods- Have you ever noticed that when you swallow that really hot jalapeno that you start to sweat and feel a little hot (I have on many occasions)? Great news! You are speeding up your metabolism. Add some red pepper, or jalapenos to your favorite dish to get going. Mexican and Thai are great choices for this.

**Eat Breakfast-Believe it or not, it may be the most important meal of the day as far as metabolism (and weight loss) is concerned. People who eat breakfast lose more weight than breakfast skippers do, according to studies. Breakfast gives your metabolism a boost and provides a consistent energy supply throughout the day. Christopher, a New York City fitness expert and my online personal trainer is constantly stressing this to me!
-
**Eat Lots Of Small Meals Throughout The Day-If you can eat 5-6 small meals (try not to go for more than 4 hours without eating) this will keep your metabolism running great. I have also found this to be helpful so that I do not overeat. I never really feel hungry.

**Drink Green Tea-Studies have found that green tea extract actually increases metabolism. The antioxidants in tea appear to improve concentration, gently boost energy, make people happier, lower cholesterol levels, improve cardiovascular health and help guard against some cancers too. Sounds like a win win idea to me.
-
**Avoid Stress-Too much physical or emotional stress causes our bodies to release a steroid called cortisol that actually slows down our metabolism and can cause weight gain, especially around your stomach area.
-
**Eat Protein-You should make sure that 10 to 35 percent of your total daily calories come from protein. The amino acids in protein make it harder for your body to break down than carbs and fats so you burn more calories. This does not mean you have to eat a lot of meat (if you do eat meat I think the organic grass fed is best). I am a vegetarian and eat a lot of eggs (thank you Christopher),nuts, cheeses and other low fat dairy to get in my protein.

**Get Plenty Of Sleep-Studies show that people who don’t get seven to eight hours a night of sleep are more prone to weight gain. I have heard that the first 4 hours of sleep help with brain repair and the last 4 hours help with body repair (this is just a rumor but comes from a reliable source).
-
**Stay Away From Sugar- Honestly, this has to be my least favorite as I love, love, love sweets! Unfortunately, sugar throws our metabolic rate into fat storage mode (that just sounds awful).

Isn't this terrific! These are really not tough tips to include in our daily lives (although I do struggle with the sugar one) so that we can burn calories more efficiently and speed up the ever mysterious metabolism (what does a metabolism look like? anything?).

I think these are all great eating tips for a fired up metabolism. My BIGGEST tip for increasing the amount of energy your body burns around the clock would be to put on muscle it is much denser than fat (so it's heavier for the same size), it gives you a nice shape and it needs more energy 24 hours a day.

though I struggle with the sugar as well---I tell myself that weight training will help undo my treats :)

Another thing that I have noticed is eating late seems to slow down calorie burning.

I also hear cinnamon does the trick. Love drowning my plain quick oats in cinnamon. As usual, great tips! And, thanks for the entrecard recommendation :)

Wow tons of great metabolic tips. I didn't know about the spicy foods one. I love green tea so that is great.
I drink green tea, eat spicy food, take a little sugar, and I eat small meals only. I'm feeling great with my weight, 51 kilos in my 5'6" frame.

Great information, as always, love!
wow, awesome tips that work! I've made many of your suggestion apart of my lifestyle over the years. Many of these tips really work and make a world of difference.

In particular, last summer I was extremely active and eating small meals, etc. It was unreal, I remember feeling and thinking to myself, "I do not think I can keep up."

I know it sounds crazy but if you decide to adapt these practices in your lifestyle get ready for a ride! Remember to keep feeding your metabolism, remember everyone is different so how your body reacts will not always be true for the next person.

It kinda funny because most people think " I have to eat less" but I was eating more and burning more, as well as losing more weight.

Last summer, I lost almost 30 pounds because I was keeping my metabolism pumped through various tips mentioned in this article.

Excellent post!

I struggle with the sugar one as well. I will be pretty good at limiting myself to one treat a day, but if there are sweets in the house, it's so easy to just snack on them more than that. I'm pretty good with the others, eating breakfast, smaller meals more often, etc. How do you cut back on sugar?

Wow, just what i needed to read. I have been on a crusade to get ripped for the summer and I want a health metabolism on my side! I love spicy food too. Question: Can "splurging" if you will - my day is Saturday and occasionally Sunday - be good for the metabolism, or should i not cheat all together?

Great tips! I agree with you about the sugar.

Sugar... no problem. Sleep... no problem. The 5 - 6 meals a day is a challenge. I really need to try this trick.
Cheers!

Well, I love spicy foods and feel awful without enough protein... I need to work on the getting of enough sleep though... I'm a night owl who has to get the kiddo up at 6... probably not good on the waistline!
Those are great tips but I'm kinda a wimp when it comes to Jalapeños.

Great tips as usual! I heard about the spicy foods speeding up your metabolism years ago. I love anything with hot peppers, but I'm not sure it has helped my waistline! :)

Hi Hedi, we have a few things in common, I found you from Regina blog, you have a very nice blog, I too consider myself to be a health girl, my thing is all the chemical toxins in our water, air, cookware, new homes, paints, clothing, lotions, shampoos, hey did I say shampoo?
:o} anyway we should cross post sometime,if I can ever get my head away from this election and back where it needs to be which is health

Hi Scherer - my take on splurging every now and again is that it is definitely good for your metabolism and your sanity - but only if you plan it in advance (or you're likely to feel guilty) and only if it's one meal a week. If you have a whole day of splurging you'll probably more than undo your good work all week.

My personal approach is to eat 90% healthy, unprocessed foods, and eat 1 treat each day. 1 treat for me is a glass of wine, a chocolate, an icecream, or a piece of buttery garlic bread. I prefer to have a little something every day.
"Lady G" makes a great point. The 90-10 Rule -- eating whole, nutritious foods at least 90% of the time; "cheating" 10% -- is incredibly effective for developing a healthy body and enhancing performance. At 6 meals per day, 42 meals per week, that's roughly 4 "cheat" meals available to you per week. Use this as a guide and it's likely 99% of the population would be fine.

You'll get out of your nutrition and training what you put into it! Focus on giving an "A" effort on your nutrition (and overall lifestyle) and you'll be on your way to getting "A" results!

Someone explained the breakfast-metabolism connection to my by making the point that when we don't eat breakfast, our body doesn't quite know what to do with the food we eat later and is in essence shocked and thrown for a loop. However, when we eat breakfast within an hour of waking up, our body realizes that this food is energy, and then is much more prepared for food later in the day. It's much like practicing or not practicing before a big sporting event, the team/person that practices will perform much better in the even, just like the person who eats breakfast will process later food much better.

Great tips, I get to eat more spicy foods now!

You are in very good company because I am also told by my Mother that I have a good metabolism! Apparently this is a fortunate thing because most people with good metabolisms live healthy lifestyles and eat healthy food. Apparently their good metabolism makes them do this.

I must have a really, really, good metabolism as mine makes me stay away from fast food, high fructose corn syrup, sugar and salt.

If, in a moment of weakness I stray too close to any of the above nasty items, my metabolism gets very unhappy. And as we all know if our metabolism is unhappy, ain't nobody happy.

Great list you have here Heidi. The one I struggle with is getting enough sleep. It's always tempting to watch a little more TV or spend that extra hour on the Internet as the evening draws to a close.
